About me
My name is Merel van Garderen-Lindhout, and I offer psychological treatments for adolescents and adults in Amsterdam.
In 2015, I completed my Bachelor's in Psychology at the University of Amsterdam, followed by a Master's in Clinical Forensic Psychology in 2016. Initially, I specialized in addiction care, treating both addictions and co-occurring disorders, such as anxiety and mood disorders.
My experience in this field means that I rarely shy away from complex cases, and I value a strong therapeutic relationship. I later completed post-master training to become a licensed healthcare psychologist (GZ-Psycholoog), which allowed me to expand my expertise in both generalist and specialist areas. Read here for more information about my background and therapeutic style.
In my private practice, I treat a wide range of disorders. I believe in a clear, straightforward approach, with room for a touch of humor when appropriate. I offer treatment for the following conditions:
Specific Phobia (not covered by insurance) | Social Anxiety Disorder | Panic Disorder |
Agoraphobia | Generalised Anxiety Disorder | Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder |
Depressive disorder | Self-Esteem issues | Schema Focused Therapy |
AD(H)D | Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) | Psychological Issues During and After Pregnancy (not covered by insurance) |
Relationship Issues | Somatic Symptom Disorder | Illness Anxiety Disorder |
In addition to cognitive techniques (focused on thought processes, logic, and behavior), I find that experiential (emotional) techniques can be particularly powerful and effective in treatment.
Therapeutic Approach
I utilize a range of therapeutic methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, imagery and rescripting (trauma work), imaginary exposure (trauma work), Schema Focused Therapy and the 12-Step Program (for addiction). I like to work tailor made, this means that I can work eclectic with these techniques. In general, I always see therapy as a collaboration and I will include you as much as I can in selecting the best approach.
Credentials and certifications
In addition to the qualifications listed below, I am a member of the Dutch Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy (VGCt, 306823) and the Association for Schema Therapy (VST, 197590).
