How I work
My approach
You may have a pretty good understanding of what you are struggling with. Yet understanding something does not always make it easier to actually change it. In therapy, we therefore look not only at why you do what you do, but especially at what keeps your symptoms and patterns going and what you need to respond to them differently.
Together, we determine what you need
We start with an intake where we discuss what you are struggling with, what you would like to change and what you need. From there, we work towards your treatment goals in a focused and practical way. Depending on your concerns, I use approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Schema Therapy and exposure therapy. Sometimes we combine different techniques. The method itself is never the goal. What matters to me is finding what actually helps you.
Therapy starts with life outside the therapy room
During treatment, we explore and practise new ways of thinking, feeling and responding. This sometimes means trying something out or practising between sessions. Real change happens through new experiences. First the training wheels, then riding on your own. At the beginning, I help guide you a little more. Together, we map out what is happening and practise new ways of dealing with it. Gradually, the training wheels come off. The goal is for you to eventually be able to move forward on your own.
Personal, clear and engaged
I believe it is important that you feel comfortable and able to be open. At the same time, I will challenge you when needed and hold up a mirror when that can help you move forward. My style is personal, clear and engaged, with room for humour when it feels appropriate. Do you recognise yourself in this? You do not need to know in advance which type of treatment you need. During the intake, we look together at what would be most appropriate for you.
